Tell me more about Crowns and Onlays
A crown (or onlay) is a custom-made ‘cap’ that fits over the entire (or partial in the case of an onlay) surface of a tooth. Crowns can become necessary when severe decay or infection has occurred or if a tooth has sustained a serious injury like a deep fracture or crack.
Our crowns are made to fit your tooth shape and shade and will seamlessly co-exist with your neighbouring teeth and smile symmetry.
Treatment Steps
Examination
Your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of the problem tooth. X-rays may be taken to establish if any underlying tooth structures or neighbouring teeth are affected.
Preparing your tooth for a crown or onlay
We believe strongly in minimal intervention dentistry and always aim to keep the amount of tooth structure removed to a minimum. We believe that there is no material better than natural tooth structure, and when possible or advisable, we will try to keep as much of your tooth as possible. Instead of doing a full-coverage crown, we may opt for a partial crown (also known as onlay) after discussing this with you.
The tooth structure needs to be removed to ensure that the crown (or onlay) fits over the top of the tooth and is of the correct thickness compared with your existing teeth.
A digital dental scan is taken and sent to the dental laboratory, where your crown will be created. We always provide you with a temporary crown whilst you wait for your new crown to come back from the lab.
Fitting your crown or onlay
Your crown is placed over the tooth and cemented in position with a strong adhesive. We then check your bite and make adjustments if needed.
