Treatment Steps

Examination

Your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of the affected tooth. X-rays are taken to establish if any underlying tooth structures are affected.

Disinfecting your tooth

The infected pulp within the tooth is removed, and the root canals of your tooth are thoroughly cleaned. We use specialised equipment that allows us to access as much as possible every last area of infected matter, significantly reducing the possibility of post-procedural infection.
After completion of the root canal treatment, we would typically get you back for a review, and should healing be seen, we can then plan for the preparation of your tooth for a crown.

Fitting your crown

At a subsequent appointment, the tooth will be fitted with a temporary crown.
Your temporary crown is replaced by a long-term bespoke crown at a second appointment. This will provide the aesthetic and long-term function your oral anatomy requires.

1. What Are The Signs Of An Infected Tooth?

Please make an appointment with us right away if you notice any of the following symptoms:

Dental pain and sensitivity that prevent you from engaging in day-to-day activities.
Changes to the shade of a specific tooth (infected teeth can appear grey or black in shade).
Gum swelling and sensitivity.
A dental abscess.

Dental infections can often exhibit no symptoms. We strongly encourage you never to miss a routine dental check-up, during which your dentist can spot minor and obscure symptoms of a dental infection before they become serious (it can be hard to spot these in the mirror at home!)

2. Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

We take every possible measure to make sure that discomfort is kept to a minimum. Our dentists are empathetic to the fact that for some patients, coming to the dentist for a dental procedure like root canal treatment can feel very daunting.

My son Christopher has learning difficulties and is disabled, so we decided to have him sedated for his teeth to be cleaned as he had a lot of plaque that was impossible to remove He was very anxious, but when he met David he was lovely with Chris and talked him through the whole process. I was very nervous about getting two fillings but Dimitri and nurse Lauren completely put me at ease today. They worked excellently together and I found the whole experience to be so much better than I imagined.
