Your dentist will take you through the advantages and limitations of both options during your consultation.
Veneers were first made for Hollywood stars to wear on camera, covering imperfections and discolouration.
Today, their design has evolved for them to become a long-term smile enhancement solution. Porcelain or Ceramic veneers are widely considered the highest-quality material for veneer creation. This robust and aesthetic material is superbly resistant to both staining and cracking (though it’s still important to care for your veneer if you want to maximise its lifespan).
Consultation chat
You must have a healthy oral health and hygiene foundation to be suitable for veneers.
As responsible dentists, we will never perform cosmetic treatment until this is the case.
Once we are happy that your teeth are ready to receive veneers, we can get to work by taking digital impressions of your teeth.
Tooth preparation
Your dentist will remove a portion of the tooth under local anaesthetic. This will create room for the veneer to fit over the top. A 3D scan of your teeth is taken and sent away to the dental technician, who shapes the porcelain into a custom veneer. The shade will be matched to your existing tooth shade (if you are having a full smile makeover, you may be opting for a whiter shade than your existing natural tooth shade).
Your new veneer
Your new veneer is fitted over the tooth with a strong adhesive. Your dentist will check your bite and make your dentition look natural and in keeping with your mouth shape. Small adjustments can be made before your dentist fits it in place or afterwards.
Your dentist will take you through the advantages and limitations of both options during your consultation.
It is still possible for the supporting teeth underneath veneers to sustain cavities, but it is avoidable. Brush and floss your teeth as normal to prevent bacteria from accessing the enamel and dentin underneath the veneer. If a cavity presents itself, you may need to have your veneer replaced.
This is an outcome we want to help our patients avoid wherever possible. We will give you preventive advice at routine dentist and hygienist appointments to help you maximise the vitality of your veneer.
