Why You May Require a Dental Crown

Having a dental crown comes with many advantages, both cosmetically and medically. One of the main reasons patients visit our dental clinic in Brighton and Hove for dental crown placement is to protect their weak tooth (or teeth). The patient may be suffering from tooth decay – which is where the tooth has become weak due to the build-up of plaque and bacteria – and the dental crown will help protect the tooth from further decay.

Here the main reasons why you might require a dental crown:

  • Restoring an already broken tooth – another common reason dental crowns are used is to restore previously broken teeth to their natural shape and form.
  • Support fillings – covering fillings with dental crowns is becoming increasingly popular, considering many fillings applied in the past were black and therefore easier to notice.
  • Dental bridge support – dental crowns also help hold dental bridges in place.
  • Tooth discolouration – similar to covering broken or worn teeth, dental crowns also help cover teeth that have become discoloured due to sugary foods and drinks.
  • Cosmetic reasons – it is becoming more and more common for people to visit dental clinics for cosmetic reasons. Patients often come into our clinic without any real medical or health concerns, they simply want to alter their tooth’s appearance to look more natural.

What are Dental Crowns Made From?

Dental crowns can be made from a variety of different materials, with new materials being made every day to match the authenticity of real teeth. Some of the most popular materials used are:

  • Porcelain – one of the most common materials used in dentistry. Porcelain provides the closest match to the true colour of a tooth. While they are not as strong as bonded crowns, patients opt for porcelain crowns because of how natural they look. They are predominantly used for front teeth.
  • Glass – glass dental crowns are similar to porcelain in that they look very natural. They can also be positioned anywhere in the mouth.
  • Ceramic – this technique offers a metal-free dental crown, which is able give the strength of a bonded crown and the appearance of a porcelain crown.
  • Gold-alloy – gold remains one of the oldest dental crown filling materials. Today, it’s used in combination with other metal alloys to increase strength – making it one of the most durable crowns you can get. As their name suggests, these crowns are silver or gold in colour.

A Hugely Popular Procedure

Dental crowns are one of the most popular dental procedures and there are lots of reasons why you may need one, or more. Hove Dental Clinic are based in Hove and have customers receiving dental crowns throughout the whole of Brighton and Hove.
